Hair Today…Gone Tomorrow…

There’s something about seeing a well groomed dog walking down the street…you can’t help but smile at how cute they look.  Although most dogs probably don’t like the actual grooming process, even the most reluctant of “customers” seem to have an extra spring in their step after being pampered at a doggie beauty salon.

I won’t get into the whole “hair” versus “fur” debate, but suffice to say that a Bichon’s coat takes a great deal of maintenance in order to keep it clean and in good condition.  If left alone, your once cute and adorable little puppy can evolve into a little hairy monster right before your very eyes.

"Who You Calling Hairy..."

Regular grooming is a must, whether you choose to take your pup to a professional or do it yourself.  Because of the cost, we usually will take Penny to the groomer once every 6 weeks or so for her “teddy bear” (puppy) cut.  Her first grooming experience was a bit traumatic, but as time goes on, she is slowly getting used to the routine and is becoming more comfortable with it.

"I wanna go home...!"

In addition to the professional grooming, we also brush Penny daily using both a slicker brush and a comb to remove tangles and give her coat that trademark Bichon Frise powder-puff appearance.  It really goes a long way in helping to keep her looking good in between grooming appointments.

Keeping a white dog clean who likes to sniff everything in sight and roll around on the grass is always a challenge.  Luckily Penny is primarily an indoor dog so every time we come back from a walk or a trip to the park, we always wash her feet or wipe her body down with a damp cloth.

Owning a Bichon can be a lot more work than other dogs, but in the end it’s all worth it…just ask Penny.
